"Yu,
who performed the solo, is so magnetic you can watch him walk across
the stage and feel you’ve gotten your money’s worth….."
--Chicago Reader
In Spring
2005, Jin-Wen Yu enjoyed very successful touring performances and fruitful
researches in Taiwan, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Mexico City,
New York, and San Francisco. Prestigiously, he, along with one dance
artist from Paris and one from Tokyo, was invited by World
Dance Alliance to perform in UNESCO at Paris for the
celebration of the International Dance
Day in April 2005. He created two lengthy dances based
on his researches in summer 2005. These two dances “Traveling
Sun Series” and “Lake
Moon” will be premiered in the SUN MOON concert.
This is the first local Jin-Wen Yu Dance concert performed exclusively
by company members.
Traveling
Sun Series & Lake Moon
“Traveling Sun Series,”
a 30-minute and six-sectioned dance, set to the music by Uakti and Kevin
Volans, reflects the choreographer’s warm observations of sun
in different cities. Each section reveals the specific mode of the city.
“Lake Moon,”
a 24-minute dance set to the music by Uakti, is a serene and sensual
dance, illustrating moon over lake Manona in different time of evening.
It also reveals the moods of cozy home in Madison as well as and the
nostalgia of home in Taiwan.
Along with
these two premieres, the program also includes two
of Jin-Wen Yu’s landmark dances, solo “Divining
Rod” and duet “Dipole.”
Jin-Wen Yu’s performance of the solo was claimed by Fort
Worth Star-Telegram “Irresistible Yu captivates
audience...He makes even the slightest movement powerful, beautiful
and significant. Incredible.”
This concert is supported by the UW-Madison Graduate School,
the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission with additional
funds from the Overture Foundation and Pleasant
T. Rowland Foundation, Madison CitiARTS Commission,
the UW-Madison Dance Program, UW-Madison Arts
Institute through the Emily Mead Baldwin-Bascom Professorship
in the Creative Arts, and Friends of Jin-Wen
Yu Dance.
